Mike Mendoza's History

Mike Mendoza has been in the radio Industry since 1970 first appearing on Radio i in Auckland New Zealand on the overnight show presenting a mix of music and talk. Prior to this Mike had been an actor and hospitality industry management. In 1971 Mike won the radio presenter of the year award, voted on by listeners. This was the first time that a night time presenter ever won such an award. Mike was soon promoted to the breakfast show. Over the next few years Mike appeared in 'Radio Waves' (a soap opera about a radio station), cabaret and various stage shows. Mike eventually moved to Australia to present breakfast shows on various radio stations then decided he wanted to return to the UK where he found that it was impossible to get into radio. Luckily he received a phone call from a struggling radio station in Australia to offer him a breakfast show. The timing couldn't have been better as Mike was on the bones of his **** at the time. He arranged for the station to pay his fares (and those of his family!), supply him with a home and a car. So it was back to the land of Oz for a while, after completing his years contract he wanted to return to New Zealand once again and was quickly offered another breakfast show in Palmerston North. This radio station was at a low ebb having a rating against the NZBC local station of 20% to 80%. After 6 months Mike's show had totally reversed the rating going from 20% to the 80% and the NZBC going down to 20%! Mike was then approached by the NZBC to join them on the condition he wasn't at the commercial station for the next rating period and with an offer of double his current salary. An offer he just couldn't refuse. He was sent to NZBC station in glorious, but smelly, Rotorua to present the breakfast show.

Mike has also spent a short spell in California presenting an overnight show, a period in Italy broadcasting across to the French Riviera & Monaco for an English Language radio station and then returned to the UK yet again in the 80's. In the UK Mike has worked for the BBC, Radio Mercury, Southern Sound, Spectrum Radio, LBC and now for talkSPORT.

Mike says, 'Over the past few years I was getting a bit fed up with the industry and was seriously thinking of getting out altogether, I had a break for 6 months a few years ago, but just had to come back. For me, after 30 years plus in the business I can honestly say that talkSPORT has been the best move for me ever not because it is a National Station, the format works, the people you work with here are fantastic, the facilities (technical side) are improving all the time and I hope that I will eventually retire after a long term relationship with talkSPORT. I am thrilled that I have been given a long term contract with the station and they have exclusivity to me. I love what I am doing here and believe (going on responses we get to the programmes that I am presenting) that we are doing the right thing for the listeners and advertisers to the station. I am also very lucky to have a great team working with me, some are heard on air Phil, George, John, Mike etc plus in the back rooms during the day Ambrose, David and Sean plus Brandy of course!'

Mike goes on to say, 'We always welcome feedback from listeners and with the growing audience outside the UK we are just having fun. The weekly link up with Al Rantel at KABC in California has had an amazing response from both sides of the Atlantic. The programme 12 months ago was for 1 hour per week, now we are on for 2 hours per week and a possibility that this will increase again in the near future. Health Guru Michael Van Straten joined the programme on a Monday morning a couple of months again and again, the response from listeners has been fantastic, we look forward to a long relationship with Michael'
